'One Fire' Housing Studio

Yarrabah is the largest Indigenous community in Australia, located just outside of Cairns. This studio allowed us to visit the community and meet with our client, Greg. Greg is a traditional land owner and has a beautiful piece of land on which he wants to build a home for his family. The design response needed to consider the family’s preferences and ways of life as well as respond to the qualities of the site.

Therefore, throughout this project I have focused on what the themes of comfort, social and everday mean to the client, in order to design a site that allows for their families social and cultural celebrations. However, I also wanted to focus on celebrating the cultural significance of the site by allowing for unique pathways and transitions throughout the spaces, encouraging story-telling and creating a journey from existing features to new structures that will one day have their own stories.
